I see new media technology all the time and my first question is almost always, “sounds great, looks great, but is this going to last?” I tend to be a skeptic about new media technology, and not necessarily an early adopter. This is simply because it’s almost always a gamble to invest in new media technology, and only time can tell if it’s going to last.
That said, I also believe that necessity is the mother of invention. And, it’s not necessarily a new thing at all, but I think that as a tool to market yourself on the web the content management system (which no doubt began out of need) is really coming into its own.
Now, for those of you who don’t know what a CMS, or content management system is, I’ll break it down for you. It’s basically a software framework upon which to collaboratively build, maintain and update your website. It can be a little tricky to wrap your brain around the concept of a CMS at first, but it’s just as its name suggests. It provides a web-based system for managing the content on your website.
At Slipher Marketing, we first dipped our toes in the CMS framework in 2008 because we had clients who needed us to manage a lot of web content, features and updates, and it was becoming time-consuming and cost-prohibitive for them and us. They also wanted more freedom to tweak and add content their own websites all by themselves. Well, in short, a CMS allows for all of this and a whole lot more.
Today, I wouldn’t bother building a site unless it was on a CMS framework simply because today’s web user demands more timely and interactive content from the web and websites. It’s truly something that can and should be leveraged as a marketing tool. If your website is equivalent of a static online brochure, you’re entirely missing the boat. It’s about timely, useful and beneficial content, and that’s what a CMS will help you achieve.
By the way, there are a lot of good content management systems out there. A lot of them are free. We at Slipher Marketing don’t re-sell or endorse media or media technology. However, after a bit of research, we program in, use and advocate for our clients a CMS called Expression Engine. Slipher Marketing is now a part of Expression Engine’s Pro Network. Expression Engine is a relatively inexpensive, well-built and very flexible CMS. We like it because we can quickly and easily implement any custom design we create for clients into its framework. And, it’s supported by full-time, paid experts. We definitely like this kind of reliability.
Good luck and talk with us if we can help with a website or other marketing-related needs.
